Spring is a time of renewal for your lawn, garden and your home. Here are some of the things every homeowner should add to his or her “To Do” list:

  • Take advantage of the first warm days of spring to inspect your eavestroughs and downspouts. Have them cleaned of winter debris to keep them clear for the rainy season ahead. You can test gutters by running a hose into the eavestrough and watching how the system handles the runoff. Look for leaks, missing or loose hangers and ensure that downspout runoff is directed properly, away from the foundation of your home (but not into your neighbour’s basement!)
  • While you’re up on the ladder, do a visual inspection of your roof for cracked and missing or lifting shingles. Also check for loose flashing around the chimney, skylights and vents.
  • Wash away winter grime and let the sun shine in! Have your windows cleaned in the spring. Check the outdoor caulking around the windows for cracks and missing pieces and have it repaired.  Wash window screens by soaking in warm, soapy water and rinsing well before installing. A snug fit will keep your home cooler and more energy efficient this summer.
  • Go through your lawn and garden tool inventory. Have power tools and lawn mowers serviced, cleaned and ready to go at the flick of a switch for the gardening season ahead.
  • Arrange to have your central air conditioner serviced and cleaned before the first heat wave.
  • When the weather permits, start the outdoor cleanup. Give the yard a good raking to get rid of debris and thatch. Turn over the garden beds to ready them for spring planting.
  • Indoors, refresh your home’s interior with a good cleaning. Have the rugs, walls and drapes cleaned. Clean out cupboards and get rid of clutter.  Have duvets cleaned or air them outdoors on a sunny spring day.
  • Check that attic fans, kitchen and bathrooms fans and roof-mounted turbine vents are operating efficiently. A well-ventilated home will save you energy dollars and increase your comfort level.

GARDEN CHECKLIST

  • Start your spring gardening by taking a walk through your garden.  Make a checklist of things to be done, such as resodding, landscaping projects, new plantings, tree repairs, etc.

  • Vigorously rake your lawn to remove thatch. Aerate and fertilize. Renew the bare spots with top dressing and lawn seed. Water frequently.

  • Plant new trees and shrubs early

  • Prune overgrown shade trees, hedges, vines and summer-flowering shrubs.

BASEMENT BLUES
If you have problems with moisture in your basement, spring is the time to find a cure, according to the waterproofing experts at Homeservice Club.

The problem could be as simple as damaged or clogged eavestroughs causing the problem. Next time it rains, take a walk around the house and make sure the eaves and downspouts are doing the job.

Improper grading is another common cause of basement flooding. Check that the ground around the foundation slopes away from the house.

If eaves and grading are not the problem, a main drain clogged with debris or tree roots could be the culprit.

In the worst case scenario, the weeping tile system might need repair or replacement.

Whatever the cause, early detection of basement dampness problems usually results in a cure that’s not painful on your wallet.

KEEPING YOUR COOL
The warm days of summer are just around the corner. You can help your air conditioner do its job, and save some energy dollars in the process, by following these tips from Homeservice Club:

Keeping the indoor temperature about 7 degrees cooler than the average outdoor temperature suits most people and is easier on energy consumption.

Set your air conditioner  at the desired room temperature and leave it on. An air conditioner cools your home by removing warm moist air, a process that can take up to five hours. Every time the system is turned on, it starts this process all over again, so avoid turning the system on and off frequently.

Avoid opening doors and windows unnecessarily as this makes your system work harder. If you have storm windows, keep them on during the summer to prevent cold air escaping.

Keep drapes drawn on hot, sunny days.

Use awnings and shutters to block sunlight on south and west-facing windows. Strategically placed trees and shrubs will also provide natural shade.

Check that your home is airtight. Proper caulking and weatherstripping will keep the cool air in and your energy bills down all year long.
