Clara brings much cultural experience to OMNI’s Portuguese shows. She joined the station in 1985 when she moved to Canada; she holds a variety of roles in the newsroom, including anchoring for OMNI News: Portuguese Edition.She also works on Canada Contacto, a show for Radio e Televisao de Portugal (RTP), which is shown in Portugal and all over the world. Not only does she help to write, report, and produce for the show, she makes use of her strong language skills: Clara speaks Portuguese, English, French, Spanish and some German. Originally from Mozambique, Clara moved to Portugal to study history at La Universidade de Coimbra. She went into education, and taught psychology, sociology, history and Portuguese to high school students for 25 years.Clara loves interacting with people and is very involved in the community. Most recently, she’s emceed and assisted with events for the Canadian Cancer Society, the Princess Margaret Hospital, and the Portuguese Disability Association. The people love her, too – in 2006, she was awarded “Best TV Announcer” for the Ontario People’s Choice Awards. She’s also received an award for dedication from Portugal Magazine. “I love OMNI because of the multiculturalism and the diversity,” she says, “It really makes you feel at home.” Outside of the newsroom, Clara spends time with her daughters Veronica and Catia, her son Bruno, and her husband, former soccer player Francisco Bolota. She also loves to read, and sits puzzled for hours over Sudoku and crosswords.
