OMNI Television is proud to offer this triple Gemini Award winning series in seven different languages. OMNI Television is the first broadcaster in Canada to make Canadian History accessible to various ethnocultural groups, allowing new Canadians to learn more about the country they call home!
A New Audience of Canadians
OMNI Television is pleased to present Canada: A People's History, the sweeping story of Canada and its people, to a new audience of Canadians.
This 32-part Gemini Award-winning documentary series will now be available in seven different non-official languages, allowing the story of our great nation to reach more Canadians than ever before!
Beginning in February of 2004, Canada: A People's History will deliver the Canadian story to OMNI viewers in their language of comfort including Chinese, Greek, Hindi, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, and Russian. Each episode has been carefully transcreated with voice-over translation and subtitling, while maintaining the high quality and first rate production of the series.
In the past century, Canada welcomed more than 13.4 million immigrants with the greatest number arriving in the 1990s. In 2001, 18.4% of the population was born outside of Canada, making Canada one of the most ethnically diverse nations in the world. Closer to home, we can see the diversity of Canada reflected in our streets, with over 40% of the population in Toronto speaking a language other than English and French as their mother tongue.
Canada: A People's History Launch Event
OMNI's reversioning of Canada: A People's History is timely as our country continues to open its doors to the world, and as Canada becomes the chosen 'new' homeland for so many.
Producing this highly educational series in seven different languages invites more people to discover and explore the stories that have shaped our nation. By acknowledging our past mistakes and celebrating our achievements, we're providing the whole picture. By making Canadian history accessible, we are not only educating new Canadians about our past, but providing a better understanding of our country - the Canada of today and tomorrow.
