The Greatest Journeys on Earth

For Immediate Release:

OMNI.2 Launches The Greatest Journeys on Earth to Cantonese-language Audience

TORONTO (August 3, 2004) – As part of OMNI Television’s ongoing commitment to the evolving needs of its multilingual/multicultural audience, the station today announced that it holds the exclusive rights to air the Cantonese-language version of The Greatest Journeys on Earth. The one-hour, 13-part series will launch on OMNI.2, Sunday, August 8th at 9:00 p.m., presenting Cantonese speaking viewers with an innovative and entertaining approach to the historical/cultural documentary genre.

Through dramatizations and reenactments shot on location around the world, The Greatest Journeys on Earth explores the fact and fiction behind mythical journeys and historical routes. This visually breathtaking series will take viewers on an exciting adventure around the globe to discover the very origins of the world we know today.

Episodes include:

  • Journeys Of The Celtic Legend (Ireland, Great Britain and Brittany) – The foundation of Celtic culture and the origin of the legend of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table;
  • Journeys To The Golden Cities (Peru) – From legendary treasures and memories of ancient celebrations, to enduring fascinations that are still with us;
  • Journeys On The Tokaïdo (Japan) – The path which created modern Japan and put an end to the absolute power of the shoguns and samurais;
  • Journeys Through The Rockies (Canada) – Sir John A. MacDonald has just promised a railroad that will cross the country from east to west, destined to be the biggest train route in the world.

By introducing The Greatest Journeys on Earth during the summer months OMNI Television hopes the series will act as a “bridge” and help transition viewers to further changes it has planned for the new fall season.

“OMNI.2 is approaching its third year on-air, and as we diversify our programming for Cantonese speaking audiences, this viewing community will see some exciting new developments,” says Madeline Ziniak, Vice President and Station Manager for OMNI Television. “In addition to airing quality documentary programming, OMNI.2 will re-introduce Cantonese-language community affairs programming and deliver other original, new projects to meet audience demands.”

In response to such demands and the community’s obvious fondness for the documentary genre, OMNI.2 will air an encore presentation of Chinese version of Canada: A People’s History. Currently, this version of the Gemini Award-winning series airs on OMNI.2 Sundays 10:00 p.m., with Cantonese voiceover and Chinese subtitles. Once The Greatest Journeys on Earth has launched, local Cantonese speaking viewers can look forward to back-to-back documentary programming on OMNI.2, with further informational programming planned for the future.
