OMNI's My Grandmother Celebrates Ethnocultural Canadian Seniors
TORONTO (March 30, 2004) - Rogers OMNI Television is proud to announce the world premiere of My Grandmother, a 60-minute, independently produced documentary that celebrates the lives, stories and contributions of four ethnoculturally diverse Canadian women. As part of the new OMNI Television Documentary Special series - which weekly showcases Canadian ethnocultural stories made possible by OMNI's Independent Producers Initiative -- My Grandmother has been produced in several non-official languages, in addition to English.
Language versions of My Grandmother scheduled to date are:
- Italian: OMNI.1, Saturday, April 10th at 9:00 p.m.;
- Portuguese: OMNI.1, Saturday, April 24th at 9:00 p.m.;
- Mandarin: OMNI.2, Saturday, May 1st at 9:00 p.m.
"Those who came before us helped shape the Canada of today, and although from different countries, the women profiled in My Grandmother reflect the collective link we all share with our personal, cultural histories," says Ingrid Berzins Leuzy of Baltalya Betulla Productions, Co-producer, with Anita Aloisio, of My Grandmother. "Now, thanks to OMNI, the stories of these inspiring women can be shared in many languages with diverse audiences to remind everyone, no matter who they are or where they came from, that it's okay to be proud of their past."
My Grandmother was made possible with 100% funding from the OMNI Television Independent Producers Initiative -- the industry's first, and only, major source of funding for the independent production of non-official language programming.
"OMNI is proud to support My Grandmother because it portrays the indomitable strength and spirit of individuals who came to Canada from different countries for different reasons, and yet speaks to us all," says Malcolm Dunlop, Vice President, Programming and Marketing for Rogers Media Television. "Our mandate with the OMNI Television Independent Producers Initiative is to grant funds to projects that will resonate across many cultures and My Grandmother fits that mandate."
