OMNI.2 Premieres
Jihad... Struggling with Islam
- One woman's journey to reconcile her faith -

Toronto - March 24th, 2004. Rogers OMNI Television is proud to present the premiere broadcast of Jihad... Struggling with Islam, as part of the new OMNI Television Documentary Special series. The Pushto version of the documentary launches on OMNI.2, Saturday, April 10th at 8pm, with an alternative broadcast on Wednesday April 14th at 10am

Jihad... Struggling with Islam chronicles the personal journey of Hina Khan, a Toronto born filmmaker, as she comes to terms with what it means to be a Muslim -- a faith that she was born into yet felt no real connection with -- in a post September 11th world. The story follows her quest for authenticity and connection to a faith frequently portrayed negatively by the media, on many levels: from terrorism to the oppression of women. Hina's search for answers and spiritual enlightenment includes wide-ranging perspectives, from interviews with fundamentalists' who celebrated the events of 9/11, to viewpoints from conservative and progressive Muslims here in Canada and abroad.

Jihad... Struggling with Islam was made possible with 100% funding from the OMNI Television Independent Producers Initiative -- the industry's first, and only, major source of funding for the independent production of non-official language programming.

"OMNI is proud to support Jihad... Struggling with Islam because it provides an unprecedented opportunity for an independent producer to share their story with others, while also reflecting a very personal, ethnocultural Canadian perspective , says Malcolm Dunlop, Vice President, Programming and Marketing for Rogers Media Television. "Our mandate with the OMNI Television Independent Producers Initiatives is to grant funds to projects that will resonate across many cultures and this story fits that mandate."

The English version of Jihad... Struggling with Islam will be broadcast in the Fall of 2004 Scheduling information will be posted on www.omnitv.ca as it becomes available.

Jihad... Struggling with Islam was selected to be shown at the Reelworld Film Festival in Toronto on April 3rd. Plus, the film is in competition for the NFB Award For Outstanding Canadian Documentary.
